How painful are surgical extractions?

Surgical extractions are generally not painful during the procedure, as we help ensure patient comfort with effective sedation options. Local anesthesia is always used to numb the treatment area completely. For patients with anxiety, nitrous oxide can help you relax while staying conscious. For more complex cases, oral conscious sedation or IV sedation provides deeper relaxation, and most patients don’t recall much of the procedure. Mild discomfort or swelling afterward is normal and can be easily managed with prescribed pain relief.

Are wisdom teeth always impacted?

Wisdom teeth are not always impacted. In some cases, they erupt normally and function like regular molars. However, due to limited jaw space or angulation, many wisdom teeth become partially or fully impacted, remaining trapped beneath the gums or bone. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling, infection, or crowding of nearby teeth, and a surgical extraction is required to remove them from underneath the gums.

Will I need to get stitches removed?

Many procedures utilize dissolvable (resorbable) sutures, which naturally disappear within 7–10 days, which means there is no follow-up appointment required to remove them. If non-dissolvable stitches were used for a specific procedure, you’ll need to return for a short follow-up visit—typically within a week—for removal. We will provide you with aftercare instructions for your specific treatment plan.

What can I eat post-surgical extraction?

After a surgical extraction, it’s best to eat soft, cool foods that don’t disturb the healing area. Options like yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, applesauce, and soups (cooled) are gentle and nourishing. Avoid hot, crunchy, or spicy foods and using straws, as these can disrupt the extraction site and delay recovery. Gradually reintroduce solid foods over a few days as comfort allows and healing progresses.
