What is guided tissue regeneration?

Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is a periodontal procedure used to encourage the regrowth of bone and gum tissue that has been lost due to advanced gum disease. During the procedure, a special membrane is placed between the bone and gum tissue to keep them separate, allowing the bone to regenerate properly. This treatment helps preserve natural teeth and improves the stability of the surrounding structures, making it a valuable option in managing periodontal disease.

How is guided tissue regeneration different from a traditional gum graft or bone graft?

While gum grafts use donor tissue to cover exposed roots and bone grafts use added material to rebuild lost bone, GTR uses a barrier membrane to guide natural regeneration. This membrane keeps unwanted tissue from growing into the healing area, giving bone and ligament cells the time they need to regrow properly. GTR is often used in more complex periodontal cases.

Am I a candidate for guided tissue regeneration?

You may be a candidate for guided tissue regeneration if you have advanced gum disease that has resulted in bone loss around your teeth. Ideal candidates are generally in good oral and overall health and are committed to maintaining excellent dental hygiene following treatment.
